Discovering Dunolly, Victoria – Goldfields Heritage, Community and Country Living
Dunolly is one of Victoria’s true goldfields treasures, and my hometown since I moved there with my family at 12 years old. A welcoming township surrounded by open farmland, Ironbark forests, and history at every turn.
Located just around 15 minutes from Maryborough and around two hours from Melbourne, Dunolly sits in the heart of the Central Goldfields Shire and remains one of regional Victoria’s most affordable and character-filled lifestyle destinations.
Originally home to the Dja Dja Wurrung people, Dunolly’s modern history began during the 1850s gold rush. Once home to more than 80,000 people during the height of mining activity, today it’s a relaxed township of around 800 residents known for its friendly locals, creative energy, and historic charm.
Adding to its fame, Dunolly lies at the heart of the world’s richest alluvial gold mining region, with prospectors still regularly finding gold in the surrounding bushlands. The nearby township of Moliagul is where the world’s largest alluvial gold nugget, the Welcome Stranger, was discovered, an enduring part of the region’s identity.
